Vista 64 on T400 - what are my options for Office?

#1 Post by Kylan » Fri Apr 24, 2009 4:44 am

I've just bought a T400 and am awaiting delivery. I chose Vista 64 bit and just learned today that Microsoft doesn't make a 64 bit Office bundle.

I ultimately anticipate installing Windows 7 (64 bit) on the machine and hear that there will be a 64 bit Office package released at a similar time.

Q1: Does anyone know if it's correct that Windows is making a 64 bit Office bundle?

Q2: Will my old copy of Office 2002 work okay for me in the meantime?

Thanks to all in advance! :D

You can just run the 32bit version of Office. The 64 bit operating system will run it fine. I have Office 2007 on this 64 bit machine (T60) and it works very well.

And by the way, don't hold your breath waiting for a 64 bit version of Office. Microsoft is too busy trying to make the Vista disaster go away, trying to "beat Google", trying to "get Yahoo" and trying to "get into the cloud" that they've forgotton how to do the basics.

1. Office 2007 seems to have some x64 components, but in general it´s 32-bit.
2. The next release of Office will supposedly bring completely x64 version. However, I don´t know when the next release of Office will happen.
3. I´m too waiting for x64 version of Office :)
4. I´m running Win 7 x64 and Office 2007 works here very well too.
5. Cheers,

Kudos' ... Well Said!
Microsoft and words like: basics, common sense, thinking, reasoning, and responding, simply don't belong together ... Ha...ha...ha...
Then there is, what I've found as a great alternative to office, OpenOffice.org. Download it for free, give it but 30 minutes of your time, an open minded approach and you may find that it's really great! Free, fast, lean, and compatible with MS Office. I have nothing against MS, but I do think they're Office Suite is grossly overpriced. My 23 cents anyway....heh!

OpenOffice would be a fabulous solution for me but I'm addicted to outline view (in MS Word)... which isn't in OpenOffice... :-/

OpenOffice is a non-starter for many people because some complex formatting in documents gets broken. I work with legal pleadings and must use real MS Word or I'll get treated to 15 or 20 minutes rebuilding the special format. No thanks. That, by the way, is the primary reason why Linux is not an option either.

Yup, there's a lot of power in being the standard.
