Does AC adapter wattage output matter for laptops?

#1 Post by chsu74 » Mon May 25, 2009 10:06 am

The plug to my Z60T and X301 are the same except the Z60T wattage output is 90W and my X301 is 65W. Both are 20 volts. Is there a chance of damaging the computer when charging with an adapter lower or higher than the adapter it comes with?

It is feasible to damage the Adapter by overheating if trying to run the computer at full load with only a 65 watt adapter attached. I do know you said charging only (in which case Brad's answer is correct). IBM does specify the correct adapter - if a smaller (lower wattage) adapter was completely OK, they would have specified it. .... JDH

That's the general rule.

If the wattage or amperage of a compatible replacement power supply is higher than what you had previously, yet the voltage is the same, it's safe to use on that basis. When it's lower, you flirt with disaster.

Of course, if it's an aftermarket non-OEM one, there are other issues at play.
