Question about cannabalizing a T60

#1 Post by spuddog » Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:51 am

I have recently completed building up a T60 that I bought as a project.

It had been stripped down to the M/B, bottom plastics, and LCD. After I received the machine I ran the serial # and found out it had an on-site warranty good until 12/09. I used it to get a screw kit.

I bought all of the parts needs to get it up and running and everything works fine. the LCD is clear and bright with no defects, all of the ports work, the machine runs fine.

My question is, why would someone strip the parts out of a machine that still has warranty. All of the parts I replaced were basically CRU,s (customer replaceable). I could understand it if the LCD were broken, there was water damage to the M/B, or there was a forgotten password on the M/B.

Anybody have any thoughts or experiences with this type of situation?

I think it's just a simple matter of the sum of the parts is worth more than the whole thing. I am surprised it included an LCD and a bottom case. That tells me that the seller didn't have the time or the skill to remove the LCD and sell it separately. Without knowing what you paid, it's possible he/she would have gotten more for a systemboard and an LCD sold sererately.

I got it for ~90.00. That's what surprised me when everything worked and was covered by a warranty. I figured I could sell either the LCD or M/B and get my money back. I guess you are right, someone looking to make a quick buck but not knowledgeable to separate the two items that are the most profitable. I was worried also that It might be hot, although the seller has a long history and 100% positive (I know that is no guarantee of honesty) on Ebay.

90 bucks was a super deal for the board, case, and LCD. Good luck with the machine.
