Right now, IBM has under their used section a T60p for $540 with these specs:
T7600(2.33GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 256MB ATI FireGL V5250, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
How would this compare performance wise to a T400 with a P8600 and AMD graphics? The only major difference I see is the FSB speed and DDR2 vs. DDR3. I don't think it would be that much slower than a comparable T400. I also prefer full screen for a 14" screen.
Is this a good buy? It only includes a 3 month warranty.
For $75 you can upgrade to a 1 yr warranty, would this be worth doing?
Another question, I have a T40 with basic specs, 1.5ghz CPU, 1.25gb ram, and the atheros abg wireless card. Could I get $200 for this machine? It is in good condition minus a small crack in the center of the palmrest ($15 to replace on ebay, just don't see the point).
I have loved my thinkpad T40, but it is time for me to upgrade to something a little faster for my day to day computing.
Thanks

Re: Question about buying a used thinkpad from IBM
Unless you need the graphics horsepower of the T60p, you're better off with a standard T60 unit and these can be located for $400 or less.
T400 is a fine machine apart from the LCD, but then again, the screens on 14" T6x machines are nothing to write home about.
Having said that, you WILL notice a difference in speed.
You're not very likely to walk away with $200 for that T40. I'd expect $150-175 for a near perfect unit, which means you'd have to replace the palmrest.

Re: Question about buying a used thinkpad from IBM
i bought a used T23 from IBM about 2 years go. the unit had a new screen, new motherboard and new keyboard. so in my case it was well worth it. and if you don't like your new laptop you can return it within 7 buisness days.
regarding T60, it is a fine machine with increadible build quality. i've abused mine for the past 3 years and it is still working. do some reaserch on this forum regarding T400 and T60s before you decide which one you want. T60 for example will be getting really hot. T400 has its own issues. try waiting for the T60p 15" screen version with IPS.
