thinking of web book.. I have loads of ??

Thinking of buying a ThinkPad web book for travel.
BUT I know nothing about them. Had a bunch of ThinkPads over the years like the t40p, so I know computers.
I'd need something that is light to carry around in my backpak, can get on the web quickly so I can check e-mail use google Docs type stuff, buy stuff, print out boarding passes... very basic stuff. I won't be uploading pics etc and I don't need iTunes on this thing.
Suggestions would be helpful.. I'm really just starting out with this.

A good smartphone with unlimited internet access can do all these (except printing out boarding passes). It's much smaller than any kind of netbook or UMPC and fits inside a pant pocket so you won't have to lug around a carrying case. It also starts up much faster, whereas for a laptop/netbook/UMPC you'd need to wait for the operating system to boot. I've had my Palm Centro for almost two years and it totally changed my life. I can get on the internet and work on MS Office documents wherever and whenever. Just now, I was browsing CDs in a CD store and needed to look up some info about an album. So, I did some Google and Amazon search on my Palm right there. Then I wanted to find out the shortest route to get home from that store, so I got on Google Maps on that phone.

I do have an iPhone that does most of this stuff except work with Office items. Great unit. I love the web access, GPS, calendar feature, etc,.. Horrible phone, but that's another story.
Anyway, the screen is SOOO small that it becomes a bit unworkable. I'd like something a bit larger, but not as large as a current notebook.
