Lenovo will not accept a foreign issued bank CC, nor would they ship to a hotel. Do you know anyone here you could have pay for you, where you could have it shipped? ThinkPads are tough to see in stores. I've heard Microcenter and Frys, but neither of those is close to me so it would be tough for me to say for sure. Sometimes college/university bookstores have them. Craigslist or a local pickup from eBay might be an option.

I don't know. I've never tried to have a notebook shipped to a hotel. I would think your friends place would be the better option as long as you have your friends place on file with the CC company. Make sure you get a machine with IWS. You want to have warranty coverage back in India. CTO machines bought directly from Lenovo do not have IWS and you cannot add it later. Good Luck.

Also, sometimes thinkpad shipping times may be unpredictable so a friend's house would probably be the best shipping location.

Another useful thing to look for is a list of authorized lenovo repair places, they may also be a reseller (for some reason I'm having difficulty finding a directory that list stores in your area).

I take CTO stands for configure-to-order? Does that means that I've to leave the System Components "as they are" after clicking "Customize & buy" to get IWS? How do I know for certain if what I get has IWS? I've not seen any mention of it on the e-store, and all I could find is this page, which doesn't helps me since I don't have a serial number until I buy the thing...

I'm gonna be on California a few weeks, and I hope to get either a T400 or W500, preferably with 3 years depot warranty. Does anyone knows their IWS status in México and Europe, or where can I find out?

Also, how much more expensive is to upgrade the warranty after the purchase? I could just go with the default warranty and upgrade later when I find if I can actually make use of it.

Thanks for any pointers.
