IBM Think screensaver causing high temps

#1 Post by Cneil » Fri Feb 11, 2005 10:19 pm

Anyone notice how the IBM Think screensaver (the one with colored lines shifting on a black background) causes extremely high computer temps? Whenever I exit the screensaver, my temp readings are 70 degress or higher. Normally, I run closer to 50 degrees.

Not too surprising. Animated backgrounds use CPU cycles, the think one looks like a flash app or something, so it's definitely using the processor.

As an aside, I don't know why screensavers should be used on laptops at all. The displays come on instantly (and warm-up time is negligible). Also, having the backlight on will eventually wear it down (LCD backlights get warmer and dimmer after just a couple of years), and if you're on battery, the last thing you need is something that keeps the CPU at 100% and the backlight running!

Kenn,

Would this mean that to increase life span of LCD monitor instead of using a screen saver, just select "turn off monitor" option instead?
