I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with an outfit named User-Guides.co.uk?
Their web site can be found here http://www.user-guides.co.uk/default.asp. They seem to offer some really useful recovery software for Thinkpads. I'd be interested in ordering from them buy am loathe to provide my credit card information when I know nothing about the company.
Has anyone here ever dealt with them? Here's a little blurb from them about what they have to offer.
Thanks.
HELP WINDOWS JUST CRASHED AND WONT RESTART! how can you get access to my data?
If your operating system has just crashed and you cant boot up then this cd will! No matter what operating system you use this Lenovo ThinkPad T43 boot cd will automatically start up and give you a windows like graphic user interface. This interface shows all your ThinkPad T43 hard disk contents and also your cds and or USB key content. This is a LIVE CD and does not need to be installed! What this means is that no files are transferred or installed onto your ThinkPad T43 in any way. This is obviously imperative for data recovery. So to summarize quickly, you literally put this cd in and reboot your machine.Next you will see a few dialog boxes as the system boots up into a completely self contained operating system . If you connect to the internet via a LAN or a router then you can even browse the net just by opening the inbuilt browser.
DATA RECOVERY What is the main problem with other data recovery systems?
RESCUING YOUR FILES OR TRANSFERRING AND BACKING THEM UP IS AS EASY AS POINT AND CLICK
Most data recovery systems and software can destroy the very data your trying to rescue. This is because they HAVE to be installed onto the computer that you need to retrieve the data from. this installation can overwrite the data.
DATA RECOVERY when you have no access to the operating system?
A lot of other system need you to install their software... not much use if your system wont even start!
Thinkpad Recovery CDs
Re: Thinkpad Recovery CDs
dejola,
I had a look at their website and it is odd that they have no telephone numbers or an address under 'contact us'. Neither do they have an 'about us' web page.
That said, under UK distance selling law, if you buy something from them and you are not happy with your purchase then you can return the (unopened) goods within 7 days of receipt for a full refund and no questions asked. "Distance selling" means sales via the telephone, television, or the internet. If they fail to comply with the law then you may contact the Office of Fair Trading and ask for them to intervene on your behalf.
Their website says that the laws of England apply. English courts are liable to favour the individual rather than the corporation that hidden its identity.
When dealing with firms like this one has to weigh up the potential benefits versus the potential costs. Do you have a credit card near its expiry date? If so, that is what I would use because of the damage limitation.
All the best.

Further to my earlier posting, 'Which?' magazine (a consumer-support publication) has been mentioned in a BBC online article about Distance Selling regulations. Look here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8421714.stm
