Cant take off one of screws of my X200T :(

#1 Post by ThinkPadTablet » Sat Jan 23, 2010 3:53 am

Hi guys,

I removed the keyboard without troubles and then I wanted to remove the palmrest ... The thing is that I cant take off one of the screws ...

The screw isnt pitied that much put I cant take it off.

Well its hard to tell which size of screwdriver I use. On the box it says for philips screwdriver: 00, 0, 1. On the screwdriver is written 3.0-CV. I tried also bigger one 4.0-CV but without success.

The screwdriver was brand new and it had strengthened tips or whatever ... I think if there was size between those two I think it would be perfect. I even tried to apply downforce when doing this but it didnt help.

I noticed that Lenovo uses some glue when inserting screws ... I believe this it to protect the screw from spinning right ? Or is it something like glue ?

I think the screw has some marks of me so I think I will buy replacement screw kit and replace all screws that I touched ... what about that glueish thing ? Is it possible to buy somewhere ?

I will try to post a photo of the screw today.

Please help me buy really good precision screwdriver kit. I will have to buy it off ebay.

Cheers :(

Most Thinkpads take a Phillips # 1, available in most hardware stores.
Hardened tip is recommended, and if the tip is also magnetized, even better.
Something like this would be almost ideal: http://cgi.ebay.com/FACOM-Insulated-Ele ... 0478811257

You can magnetize a screwdriver by sticking a magnet onto it overnight

For screws search eBay with: lenovo x200* screw

Do you have any idea whats that blue or red coating for ?

How can I know if those screws werent used ?

Isnt that coating added when screws is mounted, so if screw has that paint on it it means its used ?

Thanks

The coating (if any) is on the tread of the screws, to prevent them from coming loose.
Also, there's no need really to use new screws, reuse the old ones if you like, even "second hand" screws would be fine.

I read somewhere in manual that you may only use new screws and never reuse old ones ... Im curious how do they do it in IBM's repair centers

The coating I was talking about you may see when you remove the screw ... on X61s its blue, on X200T is red.

 Not sure how to take screw out without destroying the plastic cover also -- I used the same phillips I have used on just about every thinkpad I own -- on both the hard driver cover screws and the ram cover screws -- I think because the same little phillips had always worked before on my other machines, I was clueless - what now???

Most hard drive screws I've seen have both a slotted and a Philips. Have you tried a standard slotted screwdriver?

Hi, Harry -- -- I was installing a new SSD in my X200 and was a little unsure how it should be seated in the rails/caddy --

It sounds like you are describing a torx head driver. The maintenance manual calls for a torx kit with sizes TR7-TR-10. Check out Home Depot or a good hardware store.
Something like this maybe...http://cgi.ebay.com/SCREWDRIVER-TORX-RE ... 0422900297

And if you don't have a torx-screwdriver of the right size, a flat-bladed screwdriver that only just fits in the torx-slot, should also do the trick.
Older Compaq PCs and laptops used a lot of torx screws.
Buy yourself a little kit with a screwdriver head and a lot of separate insert bits.
Or even something like this should do fine: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-MINI-SCREWDRIVE ... 0138827262
