What thinkpad do I have?

#1 Post by pottzie » Tue Mar 16, 2010 9:28 pm

May sound like a dumb question-in fact I'm sure it is! What Thinkpad do I have? It's a type 2628. I just got it, and while I'm glad to say it works great, I have no idea what to search for as far as Google, Ebay, etc. I don't even know what category to look in when I get to the main page on this site! It only has 128m ram (bet you already knew that..), and when I plugged in some that I had lying around a screen came up saying that I needed to have some that ran at 100(Megs?) and I was trying to put in stuff that ran at 660. I didn't know that ram even HAD speed, so you can see I've got a learning curve ahead of me. I like it, and this is my first time messing with a laptop.
I'm trying hard to catch up with 1998, I guess. But I've been messing with linux, and you know what's going on this! But first I have to deal with the "no ethernet, but there's a plug on it" (found out why thanks to this forum!). Also figure out what it takes to get it hooked up wirelessly- first time for that, too. I know [censored] near anyone knows how that's done, but I'm going to ask stupid questions until I learn.

What is the model number that goes with the 2628? Look at the sticker on the bottom. We're after a (7) digit number like 2628-63U

To answer your question, a Thinkpad A22m requires low density PC100 RAM. The max RAM capacity is 512MB, which would be obtained by installing 2 X 256MB modules of low density PC100 (8 chips per side).

Try placing an Ad in our Marketplace forum for some RAM for this machine. I would recommend the full 512MB of RAM if you are going to run a recent Linux distro.

Thanks for the quick come back. Where's a web site that can get me up to speed. I can't imagine what one would look like for someone who knows about 0! Just searching the forum, saw references to battery life, charging cycles, tips and tricks. Stuff that somebody that doesn't know anything ought to learn!
My keyboard has the mouse doo-hickey in the center of the key board, and it's missing the rubber part. The mouse itself functions, I can move it with a pocket knife alright, but is there a fix, or do I swap it with keyboard from the parts computer that I wound up with when I took someone's word that it worked?

The trackpoint caps are removable. If the other keyboard has one, remove it and put it on yours.

Great, thanks. Just did a quick check on Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibm_thinkpad
it gave model rundowns but didn't help as to what makes an A 21 different from others. What are the major things that make the separate categories? CPU, date, 32-64 bits, or just which one's look cooler at Starbucks?
