New ThinkPads: L412/L512?

#1 Post by fuscob » Wed Apr 07, 2010 10:10 pm

I just received a PSREF update (http://www.lenovo.com/psref), and the major news listed at the top is "new ThinkPad L412 and L512 ann. April 6, 2010." Has anyone heard of these machines before? Looks like a potential R-series replacement.

TABook confirms "US models announced April 6, 2010." It doesn't list too many models at the current time, but here are the ones that are listed:

  • L412 0553-36U: Core i5-540M (2.53GHz), 4GB DDR3-1333, 14" 1366x768/220nit/500:1, 320GB 7200RPM HDD, 2MP camera, Intel 6200 WiFi, Gobi 2000 WWAN, Fingerprint, Bluetooth, 6-cell

You're correct these are slated to replace the R-series. Beyond which I have not read up on these yet.

Cheers... :D

Looking at those pixel counts, my guess would be that it's trying to get close to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Widescreen (HD) TV images, in other words.

Of course...because everyone uses their (supposedly business-oriented) laptop to watch HD content more than to do actual work...

I hope that they will make more screen choices available; these L-series seem like nice machines with the exception of the current screen. Of course, given the recent trends in screen quality, I'm not expecting miracles.

I hope they're not dropping the S of the SL and turning that into the L as the replacement for the R series. I've had two R series notebooks. Both have been excellent, but I would not consider a SL a suitable replacement.

Lenovo is announcing some new Thinkpad stuff come Earth Day (April 22). It seems like it is going to be some sort of green, earth friendly type laptop series.

Some think it will be the official announcement/unveiling of the new Lxxx models.
