4:3 ratio displays in thinkpads

#1 Post by printf » Tue Jun 22, 2010 8:35 am

i personally prefer the 4:3 ratio screens over the widescreen ones, but after searching around the net i see that the last high-end model with a 4:3 screen was the t61p.
did i overlook something or the 4:3 screen thinkpads have disappeared forever?
i would love to see one with a core i5 cpu+ddr3+a radeon hd card.

Hang onto that T60 as long as you can because it doesn't look like 4:3 is coming back for the foreseeable future.

You will find that nary a computer from any manufacturer these days has a 4:3 screen. The Thinkpad line has been one of the last holdouts but now I believe it's pretty much only Fujitsu offering 4:3.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em

Is it not possible to replace the LCD on a Fujitsu with one of the thinkpad ones by changing the edid? (I'm not very knowledgeable on these matters...)

I just went to Fujitsu's site and couldn't find any 4:3 laptops.

Panasonic certainly still offers 4:3 laptops, though they are all 1024x768. Their Y series, which had 14.1" 1400x1050 and weighed only 3.3 lb, has been discontinued unfortunately.

Dynamism.com still sells Sony Japan's G series, which has 12.1" 1024x768, but I believe Sony Japan isn't making any more of those.

Impossible, because the 4:3 panels would not fit into a 16:10 or 16:9 lid.

T61p was the last 4:3 Thinkpad.
Funny though when I go to college, everyone uses 16:9 or 16:10 displays, but I recall seeing one Latitude with the 4:3
Current

I'm saddened about the lose of the 4:3 display options in laptops.

I'll probably have to buy used t60p for the last of the nice high res screens.
X22 - 800mhz - 640MB RAM - 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm 7k100
X40 - 1.4ghz - 1.5GB RAM - 8GB Transcend 300x CF on Addonics CF/IDE Adapter
T42p - 1.8ghz - 15" UXGA - 1GB RAM - 160GB HDD
X61t - C2D 1.6ghz - 12.1" SXGA+ - 8GB RAM - Intel G3 300GB SSD

Unless you want 15" UXGA, I would advise a regular T60 with SXGA+ (14"/15") and not T60p. T60p tend to run :flame:. You'll save some money too.

Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

Or you could to the screen swap on a regular T60 or R60 if you didn't want the V52x0, though it's probably not much cheaper.
