Right now I have an X40 and over the years I've had other Thinkpads. Considering getting an X60s, X60t, or maybe step laterally to an X41t.
The different power supplies are driving me nuts. Is there any way to tell which one's requirements and what will cross apply? If there is a way to cross apply.
I have a Taurus adapter that has different tips I can change to - output 15-24V 65W. Can it be used for any of those assuming I have a tip that fits?
Thanks,
David

Re: Power supplies confusion
T/R/X under and including "50" use the old narrow tip 16V power supplies, these come in 56W and 72W flavors. Generally for T/R it is recommended to use the 72W, 56W will work but not officially supported. X series officially support the 56W variant.
Starting from T/R/X/Z/W "60" series and so forth, including all the newer ones - 20W power supplies with a different tip are used, in 65W, 90W and 135W variants. Generally, X and low-end T/R take 65W, high-end T and W take 90W, and some ultra-high-end W series require 135W to work properly. As always, it's OK to use a stronger adapter than required, using a weaker one may cause issues.
So if you stick to the X series, your Taurus adapter should be fine, if you set it to 16V for old models, and 20V for new ones, and use the proper tip.

Re: Power supplies confusion
What Targus model do you have? Not all of them have the right tips for all Thinkpads.
I have a bunch of various generations of Targus adapaters and have built a compatibility table for all the laptops I have. The X40 uses same tip as X31 and 600X which could be #4, 7, 104, 115, L105, or S4 depending on the adapter while the 60-series would use 31, 204, S31, or L112 (#31 is not actually included with any adapter).
