Trackpoint Domes.. just not the same

#1 Post by Passa » Sat Nov 13, 2010 10:19 pm

Hi guys,

My laptop of the last 7 years has been an R50 - the Trackpoint is fantastic and means I hate using any other laptop. What I have found however, is that any Trackpoint domes (as in the soft domes) made after the release of my R50 are very soft and not firm in the centre. They will actually flex under pressure.

I have felt this on the R52 we have in the kitchen, the ThinkPad Edge, a T400 and an R500. I purchased replacement domes for my R50 (because mine was faded and the grip had worn away) but the replacement was also too soft and would flex.

Has anyone felt this as well? Is there a modification I can make to the newer Trackpoint soft domes to make it feel like my old one? I have an X201 arriving in mere days and if the dome on it is too soft, I'll probably have to swap it with the one in my current R50.

EDIT: And yes.. clearly I am excessively pedantic.. but what Thinkpad users aren't?

Are you referring to the different styles of trackpoint cap (classic dome / soft dome / soft rim) or are you saying that new soft domes are too soft compared to the old soft domes.

If it's the latter - are you sure it's not just a matter of the soft dome you are used to become hardened with age and use?

No.. from memory, it has always been like this. Other older ThinkPads I've used have a similar feel to the soft dome.

Personally, I think the soft rim design is the schizzle.
