The best looking ThinkPad

#1 Post by canonman » Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:10 pm

I love the design aspects of the Thinkpad, i allways feel like a hacker, when using one, because of the black, and bulletproof look :D

But in your eyes which is the best looking thinkpad.

T42 in my eyes :D

@canonman: I suggest you remove the photo from your post and replace it with a link to the photo. Otherwise you'll really upset the mods because not everyone is lucky enough to have ADSL and it can take ages to download pictures via dial-up, if you remember those days. See forum rules for more details.

In answer to your question, the T4X series were tastefully designed and are classics, however I prefer the latest models. It is a bit like comparing a car from the 1990s with a car from today.

The X2* and X4*. I haven't seen the X100e in person but judging from photos, it may be the best-looking Lenovo (i.e. non-IBM) Thinkpad yet.

I like it, just does not contain the IBM Thinkpad look :(

Did the thinpad design team, go work for Lenovo or did Lenovo bring in there own

Lenovo kept the IBM design team. IMHO, the T4x are the best looking. if it was not for the chip issues, I would trade my t61 for one in a moment. unfortunately the entire series has potential points of failiure, and I do not want to got through that again, so I will keep my t61.

I only briefly saw the X4* but it looked quite nice. From the Thinkpads I have more experience with, I like T4x (15" more than 14"), T60, and the latest T400s/T410 is quite good too. Z6*t series has its beauty as well.

Of the ThinkPads I've owned, my favorite designs are (in order):

Full-size notebooks:
1) (tied) 14.1" T6x (4:3) / all T40 series
2) T410
3) 600 series
4) T500

Subnotebooks:
1) X40
2) X60-series
3) X300/X301
4) X200-series

It's worth nothing that the X40 is a good bit ahead of the X60 series in terms of looks, but the difference between the rest of the subnotebooks is quite small -- Lenovo's done a great job with all of them!

The thing that spoils the soup for me when it comes to the X6* looks is the cylindrical battery which makes them slanted and quite bulky at the back. :)

I'd go T4x series.

I prefer the appearance of 4:3 notebooks, and the fit-and-finish on my T41 beats the T410.

Earlier Thinkpads I used (from the 90s, before I appreciated the line) were much less svelte than modern machines.

I like my T60. Then my X40 would be a close second.

I like the looks of the T410s too though, haven't seen one in person however.

Sure, but looks wise I'd put it equal with the X3X series ... possibly slightly better looking because they were sleeker.

I think all ThinkPads are good looking, so its hard for me to choose which is the best looking. But I can say that I'm very attracted to these ThinkPads because they each have a special meaning to me:

R5x
T4x
T6x
R6x
W500
W510
X6x
R500
R400
L412

  • 1. Reserve Edition X61s... I'm thoroughly infatuated with that leather covering.
    2. Z61 w/Titanium lid.
    3. T510 narrowly edging out the T500 only because the T510 has the red stripes on the mouse buttons and even spacing in the LCD/Bezel area.
    4. X3x Series. Love the thinness and that chopped off corner.
    5. T4x Series.
Good question, BTW. :thumbs-UP:

I wouldn't put T400 together with T410 (or T500 with T510). The look was much improved in the -10 line. I consider the old ones one of the most hideous series. The only decent looking -00 ThinkPad was the X200.

One of my favorites is the 14.1" T60. I really like how they got rid of all the unnecessary bulges, indents and the rounded TouchPad buttons of the T4x series. I'll admit, the TrackPoint buttons were a step backwards, but the overall cleanup of the design and its symmetry made it look gorgeous.

X30x were also fine... But even the X series couldn't score more than "decent" in the -00 series - the thick front bezel with the antenna grilles staring at you (instead of being on the side bezel as earlier) - yuck! :jhem:

Agreed. Even better IMHO would be a T60 with the highlighted buttons and grey function keys. Actually, I already have the last one done... but the first one might be a fun mod to pursue...

Right, I forgot about X300, probably because as a premium model it never really was on my radar. Yes, it was fine, probably on par with the X200. But I agree, the LCD bezel is the biggest design problem of the whole -00 series. The newer ones look much better although I still prefer the thin one from the T60.

Sigh. Ahh... the Web. :P It's pretty easy to try it yourself: take the grey keys from a X40 keyboard and swap them with their equivalents on a T6x/Tx00 keyboard. I can't recall which of the T-series keyboards (NMB, ALPS, or Chicony) this works for, but provided you have two boards for which the scissors and cap clips match up you'll be fine. The only downside is that the X40 keys tend to pop off a bit more easily than the ones that they replace. I've since reversed the modification for this reason. (That said, if you really wanted to make it permanent, a tiny dab of superglue would undoubtedly solve the problem.)
