I'm an 15" IPS fan: what can I do?

#1 Post by gaphic2 » Sat Mar 05, 2011 7:10 pm

I've been the proud owner of a T60p Flexview for a long time now. With the announcement of the next Thinkpads its time to take stock and make a decision:

1. Do nothing. Your T60p still knocks any machine on the chin. Anyway, you're an Adobe victim, so most of the time you're stuck on one processor anyway. Wait another 18 months.

2. In a couple of months, get a Dell Precision M4600. By then, it will be clear if they"ll have an IPS option like the top-end HP models. Dell's new keyboard layout is very similar to the Thinkpad.

3. Wait for the W520. If Dell has those screens, Lenovo would almost certainly be able to use them as well. They might offer the option, or maybe you could buy a panel and swap it yourself.

4. For your applications, a T7600 Core 2 Duo processor still is good. It's the SSD speed you could really improve. But you need to keep that 4:3 aspect ratio. Build a Frankenpad from your T60p IPS that offers SATAII speeds.

I say if you T60p meets your needs, there's not reason to upgrade.

Sheer curiosity on my part: why aren't you considering a high-end HP?

If I had the need for a workstation with an IPS LCD I would look no further...

BTW, I'm in the "no need to upgrade" clan right now...

If I can read between the lines, than possibly because of the keyboard layout.

You're absolutely right, dr_st.

For me it's not an option because of the keyboard. The feel is one thing, but HP also has 2 empty spaces next to the arrow keys where pgup/pddn should be.

But the Dreamcolor panel certainly is a great thing. Since the W520 also has a 16:9 panel, maybe a panel swap is possible?

I've decided to keep X61T with IPS and I won't be replacing the mobile workstation (T42p) with another laptop since X220 has too little resolution and W520 is too big to be portable, for it's price I can buy 3 24" 1920x1200 IPS LCDs while still having more than 1000 euros left to build a powerful workstation.
T540p, T420s (soon to be T420ps :) ), X61t, T60p, T42p, A21p
