Glossy screens? Widescreens?

#1 Post by intprosecutor » Sun Mar 27, 2005 5:34 am

My buddy says that "glossy screens," not on Flexview or other TP screens, are the new way to go. Also likes the 15.4.

Any news on if TP will intro. the 15.4 or the glossy soon?

Also, are 15.4 screens worth it -- for DVDs sure, but any other reason?

Best, Mike

You can check on the other 3 million threads on the topic, but here's my view:

15.4 screens are excellent for home users (DVD), useless for business users (extra space, weight)

"Glossy" screens (I assume you mean something like the Sonys) are bright. Very bright. Mirror-like bright. That has both advantages and disadvantages. Personally I don't like seeing my reflection on a laptop monitor so I prefer the IBMs. However, if you prefer very bright screens they might be better for you.

In any case, they are definetely NOT the "way to go", as LCD technology has long reached its limits. The "way to go" is OLED screens, which are bright, cheap, plastic screens with very low power consumption (Some digicams already use them).

The glossy screens are great for graphics work and DVDs, since they seem to have superior color reproduction. However, the reflectiveness can get irritating very quickly (as I observed on a HP dv1000 - I think that's what it's called, it's a 14" widescreen).

The 15.4" Widescreen is IMO a disadvantage in a business machine, since it increases the footprint and weight.

It comes down to how you use your notebook.

For entertainment, glossy + 15.4" widescreen = good.
For business, glossy + 15.4" widescreen = annoyance.
