PHONEY, BAD, NON-WORKING or MIS-TYPED E-Mail address's

#1 Post by BillMorrow » Tue Jun 15, 2004 10:26 am

I get too many of these:

************START*************
.net 007: This e-mail message was undeliverable due to the
following reason:

.net 018: Each of the following recipients were rejected by a
destination mail system.

Note: The reasons given by the destination mail system are included
to help you determine why each recipient was rejected.

Solution:
Attempt to resend, or contact the recipient by alternate means to let
them know about the issue.

Recipient: <jimman@nate.com>
Reason: 5.1.1 No such user <jimman@nate.com>
*************END*************

i get these because i am the admin and the system sends notices out to users..

IF your email address is not good for any reason (mailbox full, phoney, mis-typed or the like) and i get more than one or two notices like the one above, i will delete your user id.

thanks..

I am sorry that I had a mistake in putting email to "Profile".
"jimman at nate.com" is wrong email address, sorry.
I corrected the address.

jimman, you're gonna want to edit your post so the email isn't directly formatted as such...the spam bots will get it and flood your inbox! (i lost about 2 email addresses before i realized this)

IRT "SPAM"..

perhaps i should make the open forum a bit less open and require all to register..

i.e. no more guests wandering in and out..
thus no "bots" can get in to harvest any email address's IF they can do that now..?

BTW, this is called thread drift.. :D

Bill,

I'd have to say leave browsing open. The only way I found this forum worth registering for was by reading messages. Otherwise I would have thought it was just some forum some guy posted, was worthless, and would be giving my email addy away to a spammer.

How about sending an email link for them to click on. If they don't click on it, it means they haven't put in a valid email address...

You could ask for people to click on a link, enter their mail and then send confirmation only to that address - the problem with this is maintaining it - do you have the time (and energy) to 'police' a system like that or do you simply accept the fact that there will be people who drift in from time to time and leave a mess...

I realise this, and I can only hope there's an automated solution. I'd willingly help out, but my knowledge of pHp is somewhat limited. However, if you need someone to 'vet' the new members in some way, let me know how I can help - I put myself forward (!)

It does. RTFM ;)

That should take care of it.

The other option would be to make admin@thinkpads . com or something and have the messages go there.

That option is available too ( http://www.phpbb.com/support/guide/#section3_2_2_7 )

Would you like me to create an account with a different email address of mine for testing purposes?

Why potentially turn away new members if there's a bug?

I've been here for a while, and I've yet to receive a single spam message with the email address I signed up with. Ironically, I got me this address to sign up for public forums etc expecting that that would attract most spammers. Fancy, that.
cheers,
