With this storage capacity at that price, I really wouldn't want to be bitten by the infamous 8MB bug for the Intel 320...

That's been fixed in firmware updates for a while now.

As has been claimed that for some users this error occurred even after this particular firmware upgrade was performed, it could possibly be rather a hardware bug. There is no hard evidence for this yet, and for this reason my statement should be taken with a grain of salt, please.

My statement is related to the following German web pages golem.de/1108/85871.html and heise.de/ct/meldung/Firmware-Update-behebt-8-MByte-Bug-bei-Intel-SSD-320-1325177.html. Google Translate should help to understand the texts if anybody's German is too rusty for proper comprehension.

According to Intel statements, the bug is actually triggered by a capacitor, which should actually serve as a buffer in case of power failure. Now, if this capacitor can not be sufficiently controlled by software, the underlying problem would not be solvable with just a firmware update. But, as the first web site states at the bottom, this is still speculation, and Intel has made no further statements so far regarding the technical reasons for this unfortunate SSD bug.

Unless it is not made clear if this speculation is just based on pure fantasy or hard technical facts, i'd rather not purchase any Intel 320 drive for the time being. I dearly hope it is just FUD.
