replace/clone system disk in T40

#1 Post by jayplett » Sun Apr 10, 2005 5:56 pm

I need to replace a failing disk in a T40. I would like to clone the existing disk so I don't have to reinstall everything. I have tried cloning in the past by putting both new and old disks in a Dell desktop (with adapters) and using ghost. The resulting cloned disk would not boot. I've been told that Thinkpad disks can only be successfully cloned if both disks connected to the Thinkpad. Is that true? If so, can it be done with a USB enclosure? In particular, can it be done with the Apricorn EZ-Upgrade USB which comes with cloning software? Or any other recommendations?

You should be able to do what you want to do. The reason that your previous ghost'd clone that wouldn't boot was probably due do the fact that WIN/XP was booted with the cloned drive still connected. Remember to always remove the cloned drive if you plan on booting into windows before you use the cloned drive.
