What's the difference between SXGA and XGA? Is it better resolution?
Posted: Fri Apr 22, 2005 4:53 pm
by mysbca
Yes, it is the resolution.
XGA is 1024x768.
SXGA is 1280x1024 (non-traditional 5:4 ratio instead of 4:3 ratio).
SXGA+ is 1400x1050.
You are probably asking about SXGA+ vs XGA.
SXGA+ has almost 87% more pixels than XGA, so you can have more space on your desktop. On the same size screen, things will look sharper with SXGA+ because of the smaller pixels, however, that also means things will look smaller. You can adjust the size of icons and fonts in Windows Display Properties to make them bigger and more comfortable for reading.
Things will look fuzzy if you use XGA mode on a SXGA+ native resolution LCD, not recommended.

I think my LCD is only XGA cause it only have 800X600 and 1024X768. Can my T23 support SXGA+??

If you can't select it in your Display Properties, then your T23 probably does not have the SXGA+ screen. Some T23 models have the SXGA+ screen. I have a T23 with SXGA+, model is 26479SU.
What is your model #?

My model is 26474RG. Just got it from ebay...few days ago!! I'm so happy with it. Because it looks brand new...and warranty till year 2006.

Thanks for the link. is there a difference between the Pentium 1.13 and the 1.2 Mhz version? What does the warranty covers?

Don't think there are any difference besides the speed.
The warranty in the US covers everything except for accidental damage.
Don't know about the UK. May be someone over there is more familiar with it.

All defects in the unit, but not damage caused by abuse or accident.
If your display or HD simply stops working, it's covered.
If your mates use it as a backstop for a round of darts at the local, it's
not covered.

From a person that thought that he could never use a laptop that wasn't XGA (me) here is my take:
The text is smaller, yes, but I do use a utility to tweak it larger.
The BIG difference to me in the added number of pixels is (drumroll)...less pixelization! (wow, that was a stunner wasn't it?)
What I mean is that, when you look at text on XGA, you can see the individual pixels. When you look at text on SXGA+, it is much harder to see the individual pixels. Everything looks so much smoother that it is truly an unbelievable difference!

I'm a twenty yearold with better than perfect vision...whatever that means...seeing is not a problem for me for sure is what it really comes down to. I just placed an order for a t42 with an SXGA screen. if vision isn't a problem is this the correct choice? from what I've read it seems like if seeing is a problem then the SXGA screen is the better choice...is what I read correct?
P.S. , I can't wait till my first thinkpad comes in. after a lot of looking I found that IBM machines had the best community along with the best systems. It almost made choosing a thinkpad a no brainer. now, if I only had the money for T42p. anyways, the days seem longer as I wait with anticipation for my t42 to come in....

How much does a SXGA+ LCD cost? I didn't know about that till I get my T23.

Expensive. A new LG LCD panel is about $500, the Hitachi is a bit more.
This site might help you getting the correct part number. Look around on Ebay. You might get one for a much better price.

If you DO get a different LCD, be careful.
Most of them on EBAY are refurbished panels, and you may not know if it is a good working panel until after it is intalled.
If you buy one off the internet, be sure to verify if it is new or refurb.

Mere important, only buy if it is returnable if defective (actually, best to only but if the seller has PayPal Insurance... in this case it would DEFINITELY be worth the few $$$ of ectra cost).

Thanks for your precious information. The new SXGA LCD is really expensive...cost half the price of my T23 now

. Hmm.....

You havent said what you had before but let me say that the 1024x768 LCD display on my T23 is gorgeous. Good colour, print as fine as I can comfortably read it and straight lines are straight (unlike most CRTs I've seen. Live with it a while and see if you *really* think and extra 36% resoloution is worth either the money or the bother. Also it is not obvious to me that you can just switch displays. It may require different graphics hardware.
BTW, what OS is on your machine? I answered your post re repair CDs in another thread but it wasn't clear where the machine came from. Someone before you may have already removed that repair partiton. Do you know anyone else near you that has a T23?

Nah....nobody using T23 besides me......but I have 2 friends using a T22 and T20. It seems that my screen is brighter....maybe because its newer? Not too sure....By the way, I'm using win xp pro SP2....This machine is much more faster than T22.....just loved it!

OK. The reason I asked is because I know that the rescue partition for W2000 is the same from machine to machine, at least theones I've had a chance to check. I would expect the same would be true for XP. However go to

and download or print his instructions on how to make a repair CD.

Thanks for your precious information, anyway I've printed it out and would try it out when I'm free. So....tell me about your system's spec...Mine is 2647-4RG.

Beyond what is in my sig, it's a 2648-4RU to which I added 256M RAM for a total of 512M and replaced the CD/DVD read only drive with an IBM Multiburner plus. This gives me CD/DVD reading and burning right in the laptop. Mine came with a floppy drive but I gather some refurbs do not.

I'm not aware of any widescreen IBM Thinkpads. They tend to be a USP on consumer level machines so they can be used as expensive DVD players.

I wouldn't count on seeing any ThinkPad's with widescreen as long as they are being targeted out to the corporate market. Wide screens and shiny screens are more for games and movies, whereas ThinkPads will get mainly used for PowerPoint, Word, Excel, web browsing and stuff of that sort where the conventional non-reflective non-widescreen screens seem to be better on the eyes when used for prolonged periods of time.

I heard from a computer technician that some thinkpads that comes with XGA LCD could not fit a SXGA+ lcd due to the adapter incompatibility. Is that so?
