Added mSATA drive & cloned HDD - which partitions to delete?

#1 Post by umern » Thu Sep 13, 2012 3:54 am

Hi,
I have tried searching for this but perhaps using the wrong search terms....

I have added a 128GB mSATA SSD to my X1 laptop in order to make it my main boot drive with Windows & Programs etc, and then use the exisitng HDD for movies, photos etc.

I have then cloned the exsiting 320GB HDD to the 128GB mSATA (my 320GB was only part full).
Now, I have 3 partitions on each drive the SYSTEM part, the main Windows part and the the Recovery part - i.e. a total of 6 partitions.

The question is which of these can I delete to increase space? I assume both the SYSTEM and Windows partition need to stay on the mSATA drive. But can I delete the Recovery Partition from the mSATA? If I ever need to use the Recovery partition - can I use the one on the HDD but make it recover to the mSATA drive?
Also, I assume I can remove the SYSTEM part on the HDD?

Thanks in advance for any response :)

It is NOT possible to do the Recovery from HD onto SSD (or v.v), Source and Target need to be on the same drive.
You must maintain the System partition only on the boot-drive, i.e. now your SSD.

If you go into the Recovery program, you can create Recovery CDs and/or DVDs.
Or buy a set from Lenovo.
Once you have these CDs, you can delete the Recovery partitions on both SSD and HD.

Once your SSD is running properly and it's all working OK, you can wipe out the whole HD and reformat it in one big partition for storage purposes.

In Windows 7, run diskmgmt.msc as Administrator, to create, format, delete, stretch and shrink partitions.
No need for 3rd-party partitioning software.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the reply.

However, I probably jumped the gun a bit with my first post...

I am still having problems getting the laptop to boot from the mSATA drive - even though it is higher in the boot order and even if I select it from the F12 menu.

I can boot into the HDD drive and see that I have 6 partitions = 3 on each drive.
However, using the Admin->Computer Managerment->Storage utility the HDD has the system_drv partition set as System, Active and the Windows partition is show as Boot, Primary, DUMP, etc...
The mSATA partitions however are only set as Active for System_drv and Primary for the Window parition - the system and boot flags are missing.
I tried using Gparted but that shows both the system_drv partitions as having the boot flag set.
I have also used the Windows 7 recovery disk and tried a Startup Repair and also did a bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot after selecting the mSATA drive from the two installations it offered to fix..but this has not helped - the MSATA is still missing the boot and system flags on the Windows and System_drv partitions....

Help please!!

EDIT: Please ignore - I just changed the SYSTEM_DRV on the mSATA to Active in the Admin tools and it now boots up OK!
Thanks for reading!
