Lenovo #0A65620 256GB Solid State Drive with FDE (AES-256)

Has anyone acquired this recently released Lenovo #0A65620 256GB SSD with FDE hardware-based AES-256 encryption (released in May 2012).

I think it may be a Samsung 830 Enterprise version with FDE (whereas the consumer version of 830 units did not have FDE).

Thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Er... but first, the point of FDE on an SSD is????

If someone really, I mean, REALLY cared about your stuff and went as far as to dissasemble a spinning drive and read it using something... well, FDE would be helpful there. But on an SSD there is no way to get into the data unless they open it up, desolder the chips, make a new controller, etc...

Wait a moment, are you a special agent or something? No, ok...

I mean, as far as I know, a simple password lock is enough to prevent 99.99999% of the people from accesing the data inside the drive. Someone truly determined to get your data out might simply install a hidden camera inside your house / workplace and steal the password directly.

Point is, there is no security, there is only the feeling of being secure.

mikemex .... your point is well taken. Unfortunately, some of my clients still insist on FDE for all drives including SSDs if I'm to bid on small part-time jobs whenever I get bored during retirememt.

I was really hoping to get some feedback on that Lenovo 256GB SSD SATA-3 drive vs the new Samsung 840 SSD SATA-3 series that I just deployed .... a 512GB SSD SATA-3 840 Pro w/5 year warranty. And yes, both Samsung 840 and 840 Pro units now include FDE standard in the consumer versions (unlike the now discontinued 830 Series). Plus the Samsungs come with 3 and 5 year warranties respectively, unlike the 256GB Lenovo in the OP which only has a one year warranty.

I just want to make sure the Samsung 840 Pro SSD is compatible with the W520 ThinkPad, so any others' experience here with Samsung SSDs would be much appreciated.
