Newest Thinkpads with Retractable Feet

#1 Post by Omineca » Thu Dec 20, 2012 10:54 pm

Hi.... I guess no question is too strange, so here goes....

Most of my early laptops had retractable rear feet. At some point, manufacturers stopped making laptops with them. I'm not sure when.

The feet can be extended to lift the back of the laptop and raise the keyboard to a better typing angle. I still have a Thinkpad 365X and a Thinkpad 390X with retractable rear feet. The 390X (a PIII, 450 mhz) is ancient at this point, although it does run Debian Squeeze, has that perfect IBM keyboard, and a 4:3 screen, which some of us like. I know, I'm a dinosaur, but it's a great word processing machine. I like it better than my newer models. Still, I'd like something a little newer (with the feet). Browsing is as painful as you might imagine.

What I was wondering is, what is the most recent Thinkpad to come with retractable rear feet? Does anyone know? Does anyone have a P4 machine with them? I've searched the forums for answers....

Huh...ThinkPads with P4/M would be A31/p, G40/41, R40, T30...and none of them has retractable feet.

Completely forgot about that feature. Thanks for reminding me...

The "newest" I happen to have with retractable feet is an i Series 1400 with a Mobile Celeron @466MHz. Kind of a dinosaur as you said :)

I can't think of any Thinkpads that prop the keyboard up at you in the same manner that are any newer than the ones you mentioned, and the 760 and 770... but those don't have better processors than the Pentium II.

The G-series is constructed in a way where it sort of angles the keyboard up at you... and it nearly has the same keyboard as the T30. It doesn't have a way of raising or lowering the backside though. It's just made to angle the keyboard up at you, because it's a desktop-replacement machine, a laptop made to sit on a desk most of the time.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

and yes. I am a bit of a lunatic.

If the goal is to have the keyboard propped up, it can be achieved with a port replicator / dock.

Thanks for all of the replies. It sounds like I might have as fast a machine as I can get with that feature. I'll have a look at the G-series and a dock. I hate when the best features are 'improved' out of products.

Tape four pencils together... Low tech, but it works fine.

The biggest thing I miss is the tilt-up keyboard of the 76x series. I still wish that were a feature on current models.

I have the solution for the OP, but he should keep in mind that it will interfere with docking if he ever chooses to obtain a dock:

I've seen them on eBay, but they were originally a RadioShack exclusive (Gigaware is a house brand). You may want to scribble down the sku number in that picture (upper right corner) and stop by a store to ask them if they have it, or what other local RS stores do.

Good luck.
