I presume all of the new thinkpads are hot wired but cannot find specific information addressing this area. So the question is with the computer powered on can a USB devise be connected and disconnected without concern? Similarly can the power cord be disconnected with the notebook on so it can be removed to another area and used on battery?? And can the power be reattached without concern regarding harm to the motherboard, etc. In the "service and troubleshooting guide" that came with the computer there is a Power cords and Power adapters" section that discusses connecting power cords and signal cables in correct order. I am unaware of a specific order. Is there a specific order/manner for these items??

i regularly use an external hard drive in my T42p..
the USB port has no trouble powering the drive..
any drive i use..
from 40gig 5400 to 60gig 7200 or 80gig 5400..
all mobil drives..
i don't think a 3.5 inch HDD could be powered from any USB port..

Don't worry about connecting/disconnecting the power cords in ANY order (as long as you have sufficient battery power .
