bad keyboard

#1 Post by tony6264 » Wed May 04, 2005 4:59 pm

Hello, I am having a problem with my IBM 390X notebook....it needs a new keyboard because the letters G,H and also F4, esc, arrow up dont work...now the real question here is does anyone know or anyone had happen to them...could this bad keyboard be causing me to have trouble shutting down windows....when i go to shutdown everything looks to go normal, but you cant do a cold boot again most of the time until you disconect the power cord and eject the battery for a second. If you dont do the power things the amber light for the ultrabay stays lit and thats when I know that if I try to power on with the switch I get a grainy looking version of the shutdown screen and if power off again and power back on it gets progresively more grainny until it starts to be just lines and odd blocks.
Please if anyone has had this problem or knows what it might be I am more than willing to listen to opinions.
Thanks

I have an A31p and just this week replaced the keyboard. I found one on ebay for $10. The process of replacing it couldn't have been much easier plus it allowed me to really blow out all the crap inside my computer with the keyboard off of it. I cant really tell you if this fix would solve your shut down problems but if you put a working keyboard in it would be an easy way to see if it does solve the problem, plus it feels like having a new laptop :)
good luck

Update: the new keyboard did not do the trick...but now I have a new theory...when I got this computer I took out one of the 64meg ram chips and replaced it with a 256 meg pc100 module with 16 chips on it....I have tried removing it and just leaving the 64 meg in and tried shutting down ...same problem...however on one attempt I moved the 64 to the other slot and the computer shutdown normally. my question is, do I need to do anything else to make the computer or bios see the right memory changes?
Thanks
