T61 vs T400

#1 Post by white avenger » Mon Apr 01, 2013 12:55 pm

I currently have a T42 and I wan to get something a bit newer.I've narrowed the choices down to either a T61 or a T400, either of which I can get at pretty close to the same price. All that I plan to use it for is surfing the net, playing discs, and writing a few amateur short stories when I travel. The question, obviously, is, which would be he better computer for my very basic needs?

For the basic needs there will be little or no difference. Performance-wise, the series cover a broad range with a significant overlap, so it will depend on the specs of the exact machine.

A T61 can be had in 14" 4:3 factor, like your T42 (or is yours the 15"?). The T400 is 14" widescreen only.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

Probably would be wise to avoid any T61 with Nvidia graphics. Other than that, it's all like dr_st says.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

T400 takes DDR3 RAM so maxing out the RAM is much cheaper.
T440s - 1080p i5 12GB 120GB SSD
T420 - i5-2520M 6GB 120GB mSATA
X200 - P8400 6GB 120GB SSD
T61 - T9300 4GB 120GB SSD
SXGA+ T60 - T7200 3GB 64GB SSD
T42/3 - 1.8Ghz 2GB 40GB
UXGA(!) A31p - 2.4Ghz 2GB 100GB SATA (Ultrabay)

If you have no specific reason to prefer the T61, e.g. because of display resolution/ratio, it would be advisable to rather go T400, as there are some technical advantages. Unlike the T61, the T400 Ultrabay is also SATA (instead of legacy IDE), and the DDR3 RAM used starting with this generation is much more affordable to max out the memory than with the DDR2 based T61 RAM. Furthermore, depending on the CPU used in the T400, you should get a much more cool and long running system, with the added benefit of less noise.
