Main HDD Migration and Data Transfer

#1 Post by jack NYC » Thu May 05, 2005 10:54 am

I've ordered my new 60gig 7200rpm drive and I'm realizing now that the really big question is migration. What programs have people used and what were the results. Any pros and cons for starting from scratch (and how does one get at that partion that IBM puts on the drive to get the original XP install?)

I just put my new 7K60 in the harddiskadapter for the X3 dock, formatted the drive and then used Norton Ghost 2003 to make a clone of the internal drive to the new drive. After that I ripped the internal drive out and replaced it with the new cloned one. No problems at all, took me about 25 minutes. Although, this was more of a fast way to try out the performance of the disk. I later did a clean install to further improve performance and stability of my system. The clean install was a breeze when following the excellent instructions in this forum http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=3827 http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_XP_ ... /index.htm

I used Acronis TrueImage to create an image of the entire HDD to CD"s, removed and replaced the HDD with a new one, formatted it and restored the image. No problem what so ever.

Don't know about the partition but if it's the hidden one, it does not have an XP install in it.
