Can someone please explain what would cause this? And how to fix if possible?

My hardrive has plenty of space so long System Update does not need more than say 232 GB. The only other changes to the system is a new Wireless-N Atheros WiFi card and the memory was upgraded to 2GB. I was on both Windows 7 and Windows 8 (complete waste of money) and neither of them runs fast enough on this machine so I went back to XP with a fresh install. I failed to backup my working XP that came with the machine and I do not have the original support disks. Both .NET 2.0 and 4.0 are installed. Should I install all the other .NET versions?

ThinkPad R52
Pentium M 1.86Ghz
2GB Memory
232Gb Western Digital

Any ideas?

EDIT: I have since installed all versions of .NET and their Updates/Service Packs and all Windows updates as well. I still get the same error, not enough disk space to complete the task. I can only assume at this point that the System Update 3.16 software is broken.

I am nearly sure you have used nLite or similar tool on your XP installation media and you have removed help component from Windows :D
Did same as on other machines where it was harmless. It took around 20 tries to narrow source of problem to this component.
