low res T/W510, replacing display with fhd. Reasonable etc.?

#1 Post by dead_serious » Sat Nov 02, 2013 9:14 am

Hi,

this thread could be more than just what the title says.

As for now, I got an used T410, 2537-a11, 1440x900. I think that I will return this laptop IF I find another thinkpad with a higher resolution, i.e. a 15inch with full hd. And I've got the cpu-whining problem sometimes, it's annoying.
My idea for now is to buy an used T510 or W510, preferably one with low resolution, hoping that replacing the display with an fhd-display would be cheaper.
Usually, I'm just surfing around and tpfancontrol is running in the background (yes, I want to have some kind of silence most of the time).

Questions:
1)Do T510/W510 exist which won't work with full hd displays?
According to the german board, the probability for this case is low. Someone who knows model types which I should avoid?

2)for what I know, a lot of T510 do not possess the ability to switch between the integrated and the dedicated graphics chip (neither through Optimus nor via switchable graphics).
Is this true? If yes, does the nVidia chip cause heating problems?

3)in Germany, getting a W510 is much easier. Given that I want some kind of silence, would anyone recommend this machine to me?

Would appreciate some answers.
