Hi,

When I use any USB I get the message that the the"device can perform much faster in" a major port that has many ports on it. I am using a Thinkpad Model# 2374KRU with Windows XP. I can find the two regular ports on the left side of the computer but cannot find the referre to multi-port. Were is this multi-port located?

Thanks,
henry

Welcome to the forum. :)

There are more ports in the chipset, but only 2 are exposed.

When you get that message regularly, it usually indicates that the Southbridge chip (which contains among other things the USB controller) is dying. One of the first symptoms is often USB ports functioning at 1.1 speed only, which is what that message means.

Sometimes it can take a long time for it to die completely (and make the laptop unusable), but sometimes it happens faster. No way to know for sure.

It is possible to reflow/reball the chip, or replace the motherboard.

Then again, if the only symptom so far is the USB thing, using a Cardbus to USB2.0 card can help you in the sense that you will get higher speed from your USB devices.
