An Xtree Replacement

#1 Post by JohnD. » Fri Jan 03, 2014 4:01 pm

Hi Folks,

I am not sure if this is posted in the right section, so if I am in error please let me know or move the message to the right section.

Does anyone remember a program called Xtree from back in the DOS system days? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XTree) I loved that program. Is there something similar to it that is out these days? If so, can you share your experiences in using the program please?

Thank you,
John

Wow, that brings back memories! I've used FAR Manager on and off for the last 10 years or so instead. It's free. It allows me to copy large drives and resume copy operation if there's a permission block or other such thing that would make Windows explorer just fail and give up. It also gives time estimate and percentage of completion, plus tons of other features I never explored. I'm an IT guy and this is what I've found to be easy and the most useful. http://www.farmanager.com/

Moved from Windows 7 forum on the assumption we're going to be talking about DOS file managers....

I used that program back in the days of 286-based AST PCs and DOS 3.3. After that there was the DOS Shell manager that came with DOS 4.0 (I believe) but got better with DOS 5. I remember a few other file managers were around at the time...

If you're looking to replace Explorer in Windows 7, I know of no utility but I'm sure somebody has developed one.

edit: A few moments poking around with Google yields: http://www.ztree.com/

Hi AnakiMana and Ray,

You guys made my day! Thank you for both of the links for ZTree and Far Manager! I used to use Xtree a lot in the days of DOS 2.11 and 3.1 and all of the versions prior to Win95. I probably have the original 5.25" or 3" floppies around in the house of Xtree. Ah, the days when we were limited to 640 Kb of memory due to the memory map of the early 8088 & 80x86 CPUs. Simpler times back then...just two floppies side by side in my original IBM PC that my parents bought for me back in August 1983 for me to use in college. I still have a bunch of Infocom games in the house!

Talk to you soon,
John

P.s. Ray thank you for moving the post to the right area.

Just remembered the other DOS file manager/shell I used to use: Q-DOS (Quick? DOS), the first release and the follow-up version II; not the CP/M OS variant.

Geez... somebody has gone and documented some of the features of this utility: http://www.danielsays.com/ss-gallery-do ... ii-20.html

Ray, thanks for the link and info. When I hear of QDOS I think of Quick and Dirty Operating system (see 86-DOS - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/86-DOS ).

I used to like V-Comm's PowerDesk, but now
I'm a fan of Q-Dir http://www.softwareok.com/?Freeware/Q-Dir
