Do the LCDs of the Z60t and x60/61 have the same height?

#1 Post by axur-delmeria » Wed Jun 11, 2014 11:43 am

I have an X61 and sometimes I need more pixels than the 12.1 inch XGA screen provides.

Of course, the easy way would be to simply plug in a large monitor, but a strange idea popped up in my head:

Why not find an LCD panel with the same pixel height (768) and display height (184.32mm) as my X61's display? This way I can seamlessly extend the desktop area across the two displays.
Kits that convert laptop LCD panels to standalone monitors are available, so it's doable, right?

Getting another 12.1 XGA panel is fine and all, but some content (video, some web pages) prefer a wider screen. I did a fair bit of research, and came across the Thinkpad Z60t, which came with a 14.0-inch 1280 x 768 screen.

I checked the datasheets for the X61's and Z60t's panels, and their display heights are close (184.32mm and 183.168mm) as well as the pixel pitch (0.24mm and 0.2385mm).

Now, how close is this in real life? Are they "close enough"?
I want to be certain before I hunt for a Z60t top half and an LCD conversion kit.

This is where I ask for help from fellow Thinkpad owners in this forum.

If you have both an X60/61 (or any Thinkpad with a 12.1 inch XGA screen) and a Z60t, please line them up side-by side and see how well the two screens align.

If you can take pictures and post them, even better. :)

Keep in mind that Z60t had two different screen heights - 1280x768 and the slightly taller 1280x800/1440x900.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

You can get a good idea of how different screen sizes compare here:
http://www.displaywars.com/14-inch-16x1 ... 1-inch-4x3
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't the Z60t 1280x768 while the Z61t offered 1280x800 and 1440x900?

@Neil
I've already done the math with DPI calculator.
What I want to know is how close they look like in real life.

Two displays having the same pixel and physical height creates a seamless extended desktop, which is what I'm aiming for.

@ZaZ
I've read the Z60t HMM and it specifies only one LCD size and resolution: 14.0 inch 1280 x 768.
So unless the HMM is wrong, you are correct.

I've just read the Z61t HMM, and it specifies three different LCD types:

14.0 1280 x 768 (just like the Z60t)
14.1 1280 x 800
14.1 1440 x 900
