Thinkpad Machine Type/Product ID database?

I used to rely on Lenovo's support page to find detailed info on specific Thinkpad models just by entering the 7-character Machine Type/Product ID. It's pretty useful when checking whether a 2nd-hand for-sale thinkpad was modified/upgraded during its lifetime, or double-checking a seller's claims about its configuration/parts.
But now, Lenovo is restructuring their web site and the product ID database is nowhere near complete.
I'm using their search page http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/search, but searching for 7676A24 (my X61 T9300) yields a "No Results Found - Please check and try again" message.
Searching for 7676 yields a 4 results for T400 (276761C to 4C), 2 results for X100e (287676G, 287676U), and just 2 results for X61 (7676 and 767689V). I find this patently ridiculous.
There's still a way to obtain information on the machine's original configuration--using parts lookup http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/ibasepartslookup-- but it requires entering the serial # of the laptop, which isn't always readily available.
Now, I have to ask, is there an alternative database for these?
