Why lenovo do not put Iris pro in Thinkpad T-series?

#1 Post by voidrazer » Mon Jan 19, 2015 3:17 pm

Hello everyone,

Why lenovo do not put Iris pro in Thinkpad?
For example the T440s with geforce GT 730m have 48W TDP from CPU and GPU(core i5 or i7 xxxxU 15W and GT730m 33W and some more from the graphics RAM). So why don't we just put a core i7 4750HQ which have 47W TDP and much stronger CPU and Iris Pro(better than GT730m too).

Welcome to the forum!

You'd likely get more of a proper answer if you posted this question on Lenovo's own forum...

The answer will probably be because of the better driver support. (CAD software etc.)

IMHO there are more reasons.

In HW matter - there is difference bewteen two chips producing some quantity of heat and one chip producing the same. Sure, ending with same radiator, but heatpipes are different. Lenovo would have to make more powerful heatpipes on CPU in all versions (more expensive) or make two different cooler models (also more expensive) - just look at the stock T520 and most powerful W520 coolers.

Second reason could be drivers. It is more expensive to support more HW configurations. And if they just don't see big enough marketshare there, it is nonsese for them. You know, that iris is better, you are willing to pay more. I know it, I could be willing to. But the BFU doesn't know it and is not willing to pay more...

And the final reason: "Super powerful bombastic ultra nVidia GT 1500UM" just sounds way better in advertising then "Integrated graphics"

Then don't call it integrated graphics. Call it Iris PRO which is what it is.

I'd love to see a Thinkpad with this GPU in it.
