Repair cracked battery housing?

#1 Post by precip9 » Sun Jun 07, 2015 3:00 pm

I use 3rd party batteries exclusively with my X61T, a type that fits the Ultrabase, but must be ordered directly from China. The use experience has been excellent. But it appears that the battery case is made of a cheaper copolymer than Lenovo would use. (A copolymer is a mixture of two or more plastic compounds to make a better material. ABS, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is an example of a structural plastic widely used in cheap and older laptops. It is doubtful that Lenovo uses classic ABS.)

The laptop is carried in an old, cheap Targus convertible bag for which I cannot find a replacement, because the squarish shape of an X61 tablet with extended battery is not served by current bags. The other day, it slipped off my shoulder, fell 20 inches to the floor, landing square on the bottom of the bag. The laptop was positioned with the battery on the bottom.

Later, I discovered that the battery housing is cracked. It's still holding together, but probably can't take another hit. I've since added a piece of structural foam to the bottom of the bag.

The question is whether the cracks can be infiltrated with some kind of glue. The cracks are narrow, so a filler type of glue would not infiltrate. Since the housing is probably ABS, a styrene solvent would be appropriate. Unfortunately, the most appropriate glue, Plastruct Plasti-Weld, http://www.amazon.com/Plastruct-Plastic ... yrene+glue ,costs a sizeable fraction of the cost of the battery pack, which cost $35.

Experiences, thoughts?
