The BIOS Error 0189 (Invalid RFID Configuration ...)

My T-61 has developed the Error 0189 problem.

I appears that this error has appeared on many older models, presumably before RFID (Radio Frequency ID) was prevalent.

In this usage, is that what RFID means, or is it something else?

If it is RFID, I take this is an active, not a passive process as this appears in the BIOS.

Try this:
at boot time, press F1 to go into BIOS.
When there, press F9 to load the defaults, confirm, then press F10 to save the changes and reboot.
OK now?

Unfortunately, it didn't work.

I also tried plugging in a USB Flash Drive with Hardware Maintenance Disk 1.78.

Usually, the machine boots from the flash drive without altering the boot order. This one doesn't - it goes to the error message directly.

Is this the point for a new BIOS / EEPROM (if I can find some one to do it, or do it myself from a YouTube video), or a replacement motherboard (I've seen them for $128).

Replacement of the EEPROM might solve your boot problem. A tested motherboard will fix the issue, although you'll have to decide if it's really worth it at that price. You could probably get a whole "new" system for less than that unless we're talking about an Nvidia system that has the "fixed" motherboard.

Yes :) .
