Defragmenter

Can someone tell this newbie about using the defragmenter on a relatively new T42? I appreciate all the info I get on this site.

The Windows defragmenter will recommend whether you should defragment or not. I'm not sure how helpful defragmenting is, but I do it on a monthly basis.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me what the difference is between the defragmenter and disc clean up? I ran the defragmenter and it ran relatively quickly. On my previous IBM - a desktop Aptiva E5U Pentium II !- I could never get the defrag to complete. On on the disc cleanup utility page it says I can free up 185,330 KB of space on IBM Preload C. I'm not sure if I should just leave this alone. On a perhaps related note, I have a 40 Gig hard drive, but my free space is showing as 25.16. I've read on this site about the space used by the IBM configuration, but 25G remaining? I really haven't added much in the way of software or programs. Can someone offer any advice? (My previous computer came with an 8 Gig hard drive and I've been using it up to this point.) Thanks.

Disc Clean-up deletes temporary files, and the like. It will not delete essential files. Run it first before Defragging. If you have trouble with Defragging not completing, try running that in Safe Mode. I've always found I have better luck that way anyway. If you've never run it before and have had your Thinkpad for awhile, expect the whole process to take several hours. Good luck.

The built-in disk defragmenter in Windows XP and Windows 2000 work. The one that came with Windows 95/98 did not work very well (always restarting - which is probably what you saw). Run the built-in tool monthly or every two weeks as noted in other posts here and you should be fine.

The ones in Win 2k and XP work pretty well. I use a smart scheduling utility in part of diskeeper to manage mine and it will run overnight on my desktop whenever it needs it (except sundays, I have it run a virus scan in the middle of the night then). I do my laptop manually (also using diskeeper).
