TP-LINK Mini-PCI TL-WN861N question [SOLVED, sort of...]
Posted: Sat Jan 16, 2016 4:58 am
It looks as if I have a Chinese knock-off of TP-Link's TL-WN861N wifi card.
This card is meant only for machines with Mini-PCI wifi card slots, like T23, A31, T4x/R5x.
These cards have an Atheros AR9223 chip and run wifi-N up to 300Mbps.
I try to install it under 32-bit Windows 7 Pro/SP1.
This card should appear in Control Panel/Device Manager/Network adapters.
Currently it won't, it appears in Control Panel/Device Manager/Other devices.
Regardless, if you have one, find it, right-click on it and select Properties.
Once in there, click on Details, then on Device description.
A list of options shows up.
I'm interested in Hardware Ids and Compatible Ids.
Click on Hardware Ids, and a few lines starting with PCI\VEN will show.
Put the cursor anywhere on those lines, right-click and click on Select all, right-click again and click on Copy and finally paste them (Ctrl-V) in your reply here.
Do the same for Compatible Ids.
This particular card shows:
Hardware Ids:
PCI\VEN_128C&DEV_0029&SUBSYS_2091128C&REV_01
PCI\VEN_128C&DEV_0029&SUBSYS_2091128C
PCI\VEN_128C&DEV_0029&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_128C&DEV_0029&CC_0280
Compatible Ids:
PCI\VEN_128C&DEV_0029&REV_01
PCI\VEN_128C&DEV_0029
PCI\VEN_128C&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_128C&CC_0280
PCI\VEN_128C
PCI\CC_028000
PCI\CC_0280
The above VEN_128C points to Retix Corp.
All the Atheros drivers that I know, all have VEN_168C which points to Atheros Communications Inc.
The above DEV_0029 indicates an Atheros AR9223 chip, which would be correct.
But the above SUBSYS_2091128C is totally UNknown.
I have contacted TP-Link about this VEN_128C, but they play ignorant and stupid, claiming the card is too old (??? produced in March 2011) and is no longer supported...
They sent me a Vista driver with VEN_168C and completely ignored the VEN_128C.
That's why I would like YOU to post your TL-WN861N read-out here.
