News!
This looks promising, I can't wait to see what performance benefits the higher aerial density brings.

You might be interested in HGST's, uh, promotional flash... animation.

Heh.
I wasn't aware that they planned to employ this technology so quickly. I mean, it was only announced by Hitachi on April 5th this year.

Sorry about the messed up link
If you check out my news post, I have the link to Hitachi on there. I thought the animation was funny, LOL

So HGST is lagging behind Seagate? Seagate will release 100GB 7200rpm earlier and now the 160GB monster.

It SEEMS that way. The Seagate 7200RPM drive was announced last year, launched in May, and it still has yet to hit stores.
However Hitachi was the first to at least publicly announce perpendicular recording. My guess is that Seagate will beat them to the punch, but we'll see

Oh yea. I didn't see that. I thought you only used Hitachi's diagram to explain the Seagate release. oops, wasn't reading carefully =P
I guess the reason why Seagate didn't mention perpendicular recording because it wouldn't take too long for any other hard drive manufacturer to pick up on the general idea and for it. Everyone learns in physics that magnetic dipoles more easily affect adjacent dipoles if they're horizonally placed, but since it's the norm, it sorta takes creative thinking to come up with it. After that, it's a normal day for the engineers.
160Gb Is Shipping!

Anyone find it cheaper than $399.00? They started shipping these this week. I found it at OWC (other world computing) IN STOCK for same day shipping, but at a premium price. Anyone find it elsewhere at a down to earth price? I recall that these are supposed to be about $325.00. NewEgg and ZipZoomFly don't have them listed...yet.

Nope, give it a few more weeks.
On that note, my review model arrived day before yesterday and I hope to have the benchmarking done tonight. We'll see

Any more news on this model? I can get my hands on one, but not sure if its worth all that money.

Thanks, very ambitious review. I read it through, and I think the hd is good, but not yet worth the price. Fujitsu or Seagate, 100 or 120 gb, will be my safe quiet choices.

Agreed! The 5400.3 isn't a good buy just yet. Give it a month or two and prices will drop

Down to $355 at NewEgg plus $4.99 shipping. Still too high though. More outlets are showing these in stock, but all are above list price. Guess demand at these prices isn't what these retailers were hoping to capitalize on. Anyone find it cheaper yet?

Nope, not yet
However if you Froogle for "Seagate 5400.3" there is an 80GB model listed now! Good price too!!
