T30, purchased refurbished. Sometimes (about 50% of the time) when pressing the on/off button to turn the computer on, there is no response. Sometimes a slight push to one edge or pressing the button a little bit off-center seems to help. But that cannot always be duplicated. Is there anything I can do restore the proper operation of the on/off button? Can I program the "Thinkpad" button to perform that function? Would the repair require replacement of the entire keyboard?

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Replacing the keyboard should be no big deal if the T30 keyboard is as easy to replace as the T4x keyboard.
Give Lenovo a call and ask for help.
