Cleaning trackpoint cap?

#1 Post by Navck » Sat Jun 18, 2005 2:42 pm

Anyone know a quick solution of cleaning a trackpoint? Mine has this weird blackish substance that doesn't come off with water/laptop screen cleaner (Not daring to use on LCD screen.)
Its also that softrim type... I found that those are very nice

Well I used a toothbrush and toothpaste... Instead of black, its a off color black.
Thanks. I'll keep doing this untill it comes off later.

I think the black stuff is finger oil that got absorbed into the rubber of the trackpoint cap.

I've tried using water, soap, and isopropyl alcohol to remove it, without success. Trackpoint caps are supposed to be replaced every so often, though I admit that I am still using the original one that came with this machine

I clean my TrackPoint the same way that I have cleaned the remaining glue of the stickers as posted in: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

"I used my finger nail to peal the stickers off. Some glue was left on the laptop, and some was on the sticker. I then pressed a part of the sticker that had glue on against the glue that was left on the laptop and bounced it around that way. On each bounce my sticker glue pile got bigger, and less glue was on the laptop. In less then a minute the glue was off the laptop."

So I have this sticker with the glue pile, and I bounce it on the TrackPoint a few times and it takes the dirt off.

I just tried ambientscape's toothpaste suggestion and that worked like a charm. My ThinkPad is also minty fresh as an added bonus.
