Device manager - unknown device
Device manager - unknown device
Under Widows Device Manager I have a number of question marks against a number of 'unknown devices'. I understand there is some way to automatically update a ThinkPad's drivers via Lenovo. Can anyone provide a link showing how to update a ThinkPad's drivers?

Re: Device manager - unknown device
ThinkPad X61 and Windows 7 Ultimate. The original installation was done on a different computer.
There are three 'other' devices
Biometric coprocessor
Minicard
Unknown device
I'm trying find out if Windows can see that the machine is WWAN capable, ie I've put a SIM card in it and want to see if I can use it.

Try downloading System Update and letting it run:

Re: Device manager - unknown device
Looks like I need to install Microsoft's .Net framework first, which I don't really want to do, but I guess needs must.

Re: Device manager - unknown device
If you really don't want to install System Update (and .NET), you can use Device Manager to provide the Hardware ID of the unknown devices.

Not installing the .NET framework greatly reduces the software compatibility of the system, but if you don't care, then follow the advice to manually locate the drivers based on hardware IDs.

I couldn't get System Update to work, but fortunately I found another disk with Windows installed and it identified the unknown device as a Sierra Wireless MC8775 HSDPA modem.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to use it...

Re: Device manager - unknown device
You'd need to talk to Vodafone first and make sure that their network still supports it.

Why would you not want to install .NET Framework?
Honest question that I don't understand. I thought .NET Framework was pretty much standard Windows operating system requirement for almost all software.

Re: Device manager - unknown device
I found that using Fn+F5 I could bring up Lenovo Access Connections which had an option for Mobile Broadband. I selected that and attempted to connect to a transmitter but then a msg appeared saying that no SIM card was present. I tried inserting the card the other way but it made no difference. I would have thought that if it the connection was blocked by Vodafone then I would see a different msg., so I'm not sure how far I have got trying to get this working...
I've just found this link which I'm going through to see if it offers me a solution:-

According to:-axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2017 7:47 amWhich version of .NET does SU require, and which version did you install?
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thin ... 7.0061.txt
4.5.2
On that page it says:-
Lenovo provides a link to .NET here:-Note:
Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.0 or above is required for System Update to work correctly. Use Microsoft Windows Update to ensure that Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 is installed on your system.
Lenovo System Update was fomerly known as ThinkVantage System Update.

I don't know which version of .NET this is or how to find out.

Re: Device manager - unknown device
Well, if it says it wants 4.5.2, let's give it 4.5.2.
A quick Google search yields this installer: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=42642

Re: Device manager - unknown device
OK that's sorted now. I've run System Update but it does not download the missing drivers, When selecting 'Get new updates' I get a list of four updates, none of which are related to the missing drivers.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2017 12:17 pmWell, if it says it wants 4.5.2, let's give it 4.5.2.
