Which ThinkPad had the highest spec 4:3 screen?

#1 Post by gma » Mon Sep 25, 2017 5:51 pm

Hi. I got my T23 out of storage recently, and have been rather taken with its 4:3 screen (which will come as no surprise, I'm sure). I'd forgotten what I'd been missing.

It got me wondering – did IBM/Lenovo ever release a laptop with a higher resolution 4:3 display? The T23 is 1024x768…

Thanks.

From the factory, that would be the T61 or the R61, which was available in Europe, but not the US. There are motherboards available that upgrade the T60 or X6x to newer faster CPUs and more memory, see here.

The best 4:3 screens were the 15 inch IPS UXGA (1600x1200) screens on some T42, T43, T60 computers.

Some members also speak very highly of the early 15" UXGA panels found in the A31p line. Comparing the ones I have in my T601F, T42p and A31p, the A31p and T42p look the best. Unfortunately I'm not sure who the manufacturers of each are as that has a large part to play in terms of screen quality...

Highest spec screen wise or computing power wise?

The highest resolution was available on the R50e (I think), which was available with a QXGA screen. All other 15" Thinkpads were UXGA max., but people often put a QXGA screen into the T60. For 14", only SXGA+ was available from IBM/Lenovo. It is possible to put a UXGA screen from a Dell in there, but that screen is extremely rare.

The last and fastest 4:3 thinkpads of course were the T61 14" 4:3 (and maybe R series, I don't know much about them). It is possible to put one of these boards into a T60 if you prefer 15".

It was an R50p model actually, that had QXGA ex-factory.

What exactly is "Ex-factory"?
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

It's how it was assembled when it left the factory.
