Please suggest a good ThinkPad :)

#1 Post by MSKFAHIM » Sun Oct 29, 2017 7:14 am

Hello,

I am planning on buying a new ThinkPad as my Thinkpad is virtually dead now after 6 years. The system I was using was:
ThinkPad W520
Intel Core i7-2720QM Processor (2.20GHz, 6MB L3)
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
NVIDIA Quadro 2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
16 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (4 DIMM)
720p Camera
Internal RAID - Not Enabled
500 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
9 cell Li-Ion Battery - 55++
Bluetooth 3.0
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (3x3 AGN)
I've enjoyed using this Laptop A LOT! I've been looking at the new workstations but I must say that I feel somewhat unimpressed and in some cases disappointed. Anyway, please let me know if you guys think about relevant good/reliable models.

Thanks

I suggest to look for a replacement W520 motherboard.
A lot cheaper and you can continue using all your 'old' stuff!

What about a W530?

With A 1080p display, 32GB RAM, a good graphics card an a top end i7QM processor, and SSD, you should be set for another 6 years to come :)

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I AM trying to fix that motherboard issue on that one. However, that's going to take a lot of time and I need a good machine meanwhile so I thought about investing in a next generation machine now. My plan is to fix the W520 with care and re-purpose it as my secondary machine.

I'm trying to contact laptop servicing people here but not hearing anything back as it's the weekend. I REALLY want to resurrect my W520.

You can't get them anymore. I'd have gotten something like that and customised it to make it much higher than the base models.

I'm looking at a P51 now and the lack of the ThinkLight and the new Keyboard sucks.

1: eBay is a plentiful source
2: You might be able to swap a W530 mobo in a W520, but I can't guarantee it.
3: T25 retro?

A W530 board won't fit in the **20 series frame and body because of the full size to mini Displayport switch between 20 and 30 series.

But you can get a W530 and do the classic keyboard mod

I had a strange feeling that was the case with the DP port size.
