What are the best (Lenovo) external keybouards, in terms of pointing stick and typing?
Is USB better than Bluetooth in terms of speed and reliability?

Re: Best External Keyboard
From what I hear, the Bluetooth versions had annoying issues regarding input lag.

The Model M looks great, but it's only available used, at $150!
So I'm looking for the best contemporary Lenovo USB keyboards.
Thanks.

Re: Best External Keyboard
If you decide you might want something old, something new, something white, something (big BLUE):
I have an original, brand-new genuine IBM KB-7993 keyboard, P/N: 12J5557, FRU: 12J5558 from 1998.
Looks like this: https://img-arch.pconline.com.cn/images ... 713490.jpg
Mine is in the original box, complete with a removable palmrest.
Keyboard has US-layout.
It has a PS/2 connector, but with a PS/2-to-USB adapter you can also plug it into any USB-port.
Could be yours for $40 shipped.

Do you know who made the keyboard for IBM made in that year?
Does the PS\2 convert to USB 2.0?
Thanks for the rhyme. You're in a good mood today.

Where's the edit button?
So forgive the new post.
I checked on Amazon, looked at some PS/2 to USB convertors, and ran into a little bump.
Besides writing I play the occasional game, and am adept with the pointing stick. One reviewer, who wants it for the exact same purpose, says the adapter is great for typing, but bad for gaming. This prompted this response from the vendor"
https://www.amazon.com/Perixx-PERIPRO-4 ... FISON1N5C0
"...As PERIPRO-401 is only a converting cable without functions of processing data. It can support normal data transmitting from USB to PS2 interface, however, if it's involving gaming or other complex programs which may consume more CPU calculation, it's about CPU performance and software support instead of the cable itself. Therefore we'd suggest checking your computer spec again to have a better performance. "
I want to use this on an HP 8740W. Is there a software workaround for this in Windows10?

Re: Best External Keyboard
To answer both questions, no I never read your signature, nor really looked at your avatar.
There's a great story by Poe called "The Purloined Letter" where the same phenomenon of not seeing something right in front of you is depicted.
I'm going to be checking into the adapter/gaming issue and will get back to you. Out of curiosity, can you generate a receipt on Paypal that can be paid as a guest? That's how I usually pay on Payal, as I don't have an account.
Thanks
UPDATE:
So I checked out your avatar, and I see that he's holding a nice glass of iced tea in his talons.
And I looked for your signature, something I never do, and see the reference to Guinness. I was traveling by bus in Ireland from Cork to Galway, and the driver pulled over ever so often in front of a pub, and everybody in the bus filed out and filled up. I had one glass of the real, McCoy (fresh and homegrown) on an empty stomach, and someone floated or swooned my way back into the bus. Much different than the bottled stuff I]ve had here,
I checked out the ebay link, and one poster explained the issue

This is a passive device and will not work with some legacy keyboards. Such cases require a USB PS2 ADAPTER CABLE for KEYBOARD and MOUSE PS/2 that has an intermediate circuit to provide an electronic interface..."
So I may need to check out a different kind of adapter, with a controller inside.
What's confusing is that these adapter cords tend to have two male plugs on one side, and USB on the other. Does the keyboard have one or two PS2 sockets?

Doesn't seem to be a center scroll button on the Unicomps, which makes them HPs.
I've had two of the newer chiclet style bluetooth keyboards. I thought they were pretty good, though I only type 35WPM or less. My only issue them is when I added an external HD that was poorly shielded, it messed up the connection. Once I replaced that, it was smooth sailing.

And those adapters do not have two male plugs either, they have two female PS/2 sockets and one USB male plug!
And just in case, I have such a KB/mouse-USB adapter with controller as well.
Be happy to throw that in instead.

Re: Best External Keyboard
I'd use one of those old IBM PS/2 keyboard if you have a PS/2 port or one of those PS/2 to USB adapter.
I currently have IBM wireless keyboard and mouse from like 2000, IBM multimedia keyboard from 2005, and one of those ThinkCentre keyboard from 2012.
The 2000 wireless keyboard has that kind of mechanical click to it with loud noise, while the latter ones feel like definitely membrane.
I feel like the quality gets compressed and it feels lighter as the year progresses, but good enough for what I use it for either way.

If you are talking about the rubber dome keyboard made for ThinkPads during the late 90s to mid 2000s, they are more than good enough for gaming.
That said, I feel like the newer ones made by Lenovo can sometimes feel quite mushy and not that great in terms of gaming.

Re: Best External Keyboard
The Unicomp apparently really nailed the typing experience of the Model M (they bought the patents) but it doesn't have a pressure sensitive TrackPoint pointing stick, but a pointing "wand" that is a small movable stick which has a completely different, less intuitive feel. Unfoirtunately, nothing has the sold feeling of control like the TrackPoint. I need a TrackPoint.Pckeyboards.com AKA Unicomp has brand new model M's with or without a trackpoint or trackball for 100$

Not just the patents, but the tooling as well. In other words, they're using the actual machines that IBM/Lexmark used to make Model M's with.
I've read somewhere that the Trackpoint patent has expired. Hopefully Unicomp can take advantage of this.but it doesn't have a pressure sensitive TrackPoint pointing stick, but a pointing "wand" that is a small movable stick which has a completely different, less intuitive feel.

Re: Best External Keyboard
I'm aware of, but didn't mention the tooling, as I've read their web page, read reviews about their product, and spoken with their tech support. Apparently it isn't cost effective for them to add a TrackPoint.
The pointing stick on my Elitebook, and even the associated mouse buttons are so much more awkward than the TrackPoint. That's why I'm looking fir an external keyboard.

Is anyone using IBM model M for External keyboards?
For what I have right now, the most comfortable external keyboard is hands down my wireless SK-8088 keyboard. It is probably not near as good as Model M, but is still a lot clickier than just about any non-mechanical keyboard today. Too bad that the wireless receiver doesn't quite keep up well when typing very fast.

Re: Best External Keyboard
Yes you are right, it was a typo. It is SK-8808.
It is a wireless mouse and keyboard combo set with one giant USB receiver and wireless keyboard + mouse, all of which (except the receiver) take AAA batteries.
Just as a note, if you are using rechargeable batteries, the response rates of them aren't very good due to the lower voltage. It is not abnormal for the keyboard to lose a character every 50 characters or so, especially when you type fast.
Definitely do not attempt to use them for response sensitive tasks such as FPS gaming. There is a USB wired equivalent with a slightly different model number if you want.
That said, the sound and the feel of this keyboard feels quite nice.

All of these are rubber dome, I imagine?axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Mon May 07, 2018 3:10 amI have the PS/2 version, and my brother has the USB one. They're quite good TBH. Used/second hand ones are sold between 3 and 6 USD here, marketed as "heavy duty, for computer shop use".
On a different note, is there a best source for the IBM convex (dome-shaped) rubber tips for the Trackpoint? Apparently, the tips on the HP pointing sticks can be swapped for those, improving sensitivity or "feel."

That is SK-8809, which looks like exactly the same as mine except with a wire running through and that mine, being battery powered 1999 wireless technology, has no LEDs whatsoever.
For mine SK-8808, I think it is rubber dome, but it doesn't feel like one with loud clicky sounds and good feedback and travel distance, and is also pretty comfortable to type on.
If you bought that one, please help me figure out what driver to use to enable all of those coloured hotkeys instead of only having the sleep button and e-mail button working.
