Help identifying possible counterfeit battery

#1 Post by meeyeo » Thu Apr 26, 2018 7:02 am

Hello, I recently purchased a battery from eBay and the seller claimed it to be genuine, however now that I have received it I am not too sure based on the following things. Just looking for some confirmation before I open a eBay case.

Ebay link https://www.ebay.com/itm/253535279714

* There is a misspelling of Explosion on the battery, it says "Use of another battery may present a fire or expotion"
* The battery label says L.G. Chem on it, but power manager says it is a Sanyo battery.
* The battery was shipped in a non-lenovo box
* The barcode on the battery cannot be found in any of the data fields in power manager, I would have thought it would be in the serial number field, but could be wrong.

Here is the ultimate test: Throw it on the floor. If it bounces back with no damage, it is OEM. If it breaks, its garbage!

I think it might be a fake. I need to check my stash of OEM batteries when I get home.

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Yours is a fake, Chinese knock-off, whatever you want to call it.

Genuine 44++ batteries with FRU 45N1029 are made by LGC and look like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/123059388031
FRU 45N1027 is made by Sanyo.

I also/recently wondered about the following: I wonder/ed how the following offer could be for real:

Image

The (above) offer seems to good to be true however, the above item/offer is on Amazon ... SO  :??:
Well, while Amazon can have fakes it is usually much easier to return the fake items on Amazon for a full refund.

Amazon isn't a guarantee of quality, but they'll let you keep your money if the item is not the "real deal". (usually.)

You can't trust Amazon nowadays!
They have been admonished many times about the fakes that are being sold there.

These two are pretty sure giveaways of a counterfeit battery.

Couldn't agree more. Spelling errors is usually the easiest way to give away a fake battery. Any real company battery will have undergone internal Quality Assurance checks long before any of the labels are even printed, let alone pasted onto the battery units.

Always be careful of this, and if buying from Amazon, don't wait to return such a battery. Mark it as defective so that you aren't paying the return shipping and don't keep such garbage in your house!

Thanks everyone for your replies, i've opened a case on eBay with the seller, now have to figure out a way to ship these back to China. The seller says they will pay for shipping, but I can't ship dangerous goods. Anyone have any experience with returning fake batteries to ebay sellers?

Another thing I have noticed is some genuine lenovo batteries, while different in other ways, bare the same misspelling of explosion

Maybe the fakers are trying to copy typos too? :) :)

I just used the cheapest shipping method with a tracking number, agreed with the seller that he will cover the costs and shipped it. But I am not in US with its stupid USPS ban on shipping batteries...

Help identifying possible counterfeit battery

#10 Post by packardbell » Mon Jun 18, 2018 7:54 pm

You know that fakes, counterfeits are really becoming to look like the real mcoys now. I purchased a few claimed authentic, Lenovo batteries but 3 months later turned out to be turds. These were as the seller claimed lot deals so no original boxes like those tray cpus. anyways I received them and they looked good like the real deal so I didn't pay any particular attention to them. 3 months down the road the battery was holding less and less charge so I texted the seller. She said it was normal, blah blah blah and would not offer me any solution. So then I installed Battery Mon and Battery care to see what the crap was going on as I did not accept her BS. Battery mon showed that the designed capacity was 3600 mah while she claimed it was original 5200 mah, wear level was 9%. Took some screenshot and sent them to her way, she said it was normal and you used it 3 months blah blah blah again. this time I took a microscope to it and found that the label wasn't perfectly straight, spelled "enother" instead of "another", the recyle logo words were ineligible, glue seeping from the sides of the label. So this time I texted her and called her out for selling fake counterfeits.
My lesson is that if the price is too good to be true then 99% of the time you are going to get a dud.
