limited options for m2 ssd

#1 Post by Paul Unger » Wed Jul 04, 2018 8:19 am

I'm looking at replacing my x230 with an x240 (+ 3 button trackpad) or x250. I had a 500 GB msata ssd in my x230 (Samsung EVO). I understand the x240+ uses the m2 interface, but there seem to be very few options... Am I not searching for the right thing, or are the options really so limited? Or should I just get a PCI-E mSATA SSD to 2.5" SATA3 SATA Adapter Card and plug my 500 GB ssd in the HD slot? Appreciate any advice!
X230 2324-HW5 3.3GHz (i5), W7 (64)
T430s 2352-CTO 2.60GHz (i5), W7 (64)
X201 3249-CTO 2.53GHz (i5), W7 (64)
T42 2373-3UU 1.7GHz (PM), XP SP3 / Ubuntu 9.04
T42 2373-4TU 1.7GHz (PM), XP SP3

Options are indeed limited. X240 requires an M.2 2242 SATA SSD, which the big boys (Samsung, Crucial, etc.) seem to have ignored. My friend has a T440 which uses the same SSD type, and ended up getting a Transcend MTS400S 128GB.

Since you already have a large-capacity SSD, and you're migrating to a new laptop (rather than setting up a second one), IMO the cheapest option is getting an mSATA to 2.5 inch SATA adapter.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Thanks for the info, axur-delmeria. Weird that the format has been ignored by the big boys... There are a few options out there, but not from names I really recognise: Dogfish(?!) and KingSpec. Any opinion of those?
I have taken your advice, though, and ordered an mSATA~SATA adapter.

Personally, I'd rather stay away from them, as I've yet to hear of firmware updates or other forms of after-sales support from them. I may try them out, but not on my primary machine.
