Where to find the dark grey foam strip/tape used in older Thinkpads?
Where to find the dark grey foam strip/tape used in older Thinkpads?
I've been refurbishing an X61, and have replaced the CPU fan. Unfortunately the foam strip used to insulate the heatsink vents from the casing is very weak.
Where can you find some of this foam tape or strip? I think that it might be a tape - single sided, but not sure.
Any ideas?
You can see the tape in this image, between the copper and the fan housing: https://image.dhgate.com/0x0s/f2-albu-g ... atsink.jpg

Sounds like an almost impossible-to-find item, but check this out: https://www.preson.com/products/vf1300-series/
I have used Kapton tape to put such fans together, it's heat-resistant, but not 'hairy'.
And widely available.

Looks like closed cell foam.... Ever thouh of cutting something like that from grey pipe lagging, or, even, black A/C pipe lagging??
All you need then is some double sided tape and a bit of skill with a Stanley knife (box cutter) or modelling scalpel.

Can either of those survive high temperatures (up to 100c)? It's attached to the heatsink after all.GrifterGuru wrote: ↑Sat Sep 15, 2018 2:35 pmLooks like closed cell foam.... Ever thouh of cutting something like that from grey pipe lagging, or, even, black A/C pipe lagging??

A/C lagging should if it is passive rather than flame.....
I used black A/C lagging between componants (as a "soft mount/cushion") in an engine bay near the exhaust and never saw any problems. Should be ok in a laptop...

Sounds good then. Maybe there exists some kind of self-adhesive version of A/C lagging? I'm not very familiar with A/C stuff.GrifterGuru wrote: ↑Sat Sep 15, 2018 3:05 pmA/C lagging should if it is passive rather than flame.....

A/C Lagging is literally "high density" foam lagging. Bit like the grey stuff, but far, far denser.
As for self stick? not as far as I am aware..
