Refinishing a W530 case?

#1 Post by hellosailor » Tue Feb 19, 2019 10:23 pm

I suppose this is about as generic a "hardware" question as you can ask. After six years, the top (back of screen lid) of my W530 is looking a bit tired. Some streaks and shallow scratches in the "rubberized" coating that they are finished with. I've seen folks use fine polish to make them look better, but I'm wondering if there's any type of "rubber spray" or vinyl paint, something that would really let me spray on a new finish? Because I don't think simple polishing is going to do it.

Anything that works to rejuvenate a W530 or similarly "rubberized-ish" Thinkpad top lid?

There are several products available as a rubberized coating, there is also some auto customizing peelable paint or temporary flat black paints (that are harder to remove the longer they are left on the surface).

If you want a pristine finish though, you will have to either remove the entire old finish first, or fill those scratches with an auto body glazing compound and lightly sand with 400 to 600 grit paper before applying the new finish.

Either way, if you don't want it to end up looking like crap you will have to spend some time on the paint prep before you shoot the finish coat.

A good finish çoat is 90% prep work and 10% painting.

Or put on a vinyl skin cover, such as from this colorful selection

Or buy a new T530/W530 lid.
Still NOT a great day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff).
